Knitting Instructions
The local Red Cross wishes to give the following instructions in regard to making sweaters of light-weight wool.
Quantity of wool required: – about three-quarter pound of 4-10 yarn. 1 pair Red Cross needles No. 3. Diameter 1-5-inch.
Cast on 78 stitiches.
Knit 2 Purl 2, for 4 inches.
Knit plain 17 inches.
- Knit 28 stitches; Knit 2, Purl 2, for 22 stitches: then Knit 28
- Knit 28 stitches; Knit 2, Purl 2, for 22 stitches: then Knit 28
Repeat (A) and (B) for 12 rows (2 inches)
Knit 28 stitches; bind off 22 stitches (opening for neck;) Knit 28
First Shoulder: Knit 2, Purl 2; for 28 stitches; then Knit 2 Purl 2, back over the 28 stitches. Continue to knit and purl back and forth this way 15 times, which leaves the wool at inner edge. Break off wool and tie it on at neck opening.
Second Shoulder: Purl 2, Knit 2, for 28 stitches; then Purl 2, Knit 2, back over 28 stitches. Continue to knit and purl back and forth in this way 15 times, which leaves the wool at outer edge. Knit plain 28 stitches; cast on 22 stitches; and knit plain across the 28 stiches of first shoulder.
- Knit 28 stitches; Purl 2, Knit 2, for 22 stitches; then knit 28.
- Knit 28 stitches; Knit 2, Purl 2, for 22 stitches, then knit 18. Repeat (C) and (D) for 12 rows (2 inches) Knit plain 17 inches. Knit 2, Purl 2, for 4 inches. Bind off loosely. Sew up sides, leaving 9 inches for arm holes. Single crotchet 1 row around neck and armholes.
Measurements: Neck (when stretched,) 11 ½ – 12 ½ inches. Across chest (not stretched,) 17-20 inches.
